During the next weeks startupticker.ch will publish articles about the 10 winners of the first phase of >>venture>> 2012. The sixth article is about Pumptire from Geneva, a team that develops a self-inflating tire.

PumpTire technology eliminates the need to refill bicycle tires. Under normal operation, bicycle tires lose air pressure because of their thin sidewalls and high operating pressures. PumpTire solves this problem by incorporating a clever feature directly into the tire that draws in air from the outside and pushes it into the tire during riding. Once the tire reaches the set operating pressure, the system stops pumping.

Speed, handling, rolling resistance, and ride are all affected by tire pressure. Both casual riders and enthusiasts will be able to reach new levels of cycling performance by controlling tire pressure while riding. The technology eliminates the need for an air pump and the time and inconvenience normally associated with filling tires. Tire reliability is increased and the risk of pinch flats reduced.

The tires are compatible with existing rims and require no additional equipment.

The team behind Pumptire is located on different continents. Team leader and founder is Benjamin Krempel, a serial entrepreneur living in Geneva.

The Jury of >>venture>> says about PumpTire: “PumpTire addresses a major customer need. The benefit is evident and very high and PumpTire’s differentiation from existing market players is clear and simple. The revenue potential is very solid; international roll-out could be feasible in the future.”
