The new Aeler smart container
Aeler unveiled its revolutionary smart logistics container last week at a private launch event in Hamburg. Thanks to its increased payload, better aerodynamics, all-insulated construction, and smart, real-time tracking technology, this new generation of freight containers enable cost-efficient operations and lower CO2 emissions than existing ones. Pilot projects with the first 50 units are underway.

Seventy years since introducing the first metal containers, the maritime logistics industry has only seen little innovation. Ecublens-based startup Aeler Technologies has developed the next-generation smart container for efficiency, cargo protection, supply chain intelligence and sustainability, making it one of the most advanced containers to have been certified.

The intermodal containers come factory-fitted with advanced Internet of Things (IoT) capabilities to track the goods’ condition and security throughout the freight. The new containers are lighter and more aerodynamic, delivering up to 20% less CO2 emissions, minimal humidity on the inside and no corrosion on the outside. The Insulation and increased durability offer drastic reductions in temperature variations, fitting time and 11% more storage volume and up to 17% for flexitanks. With their solution, Aeler aims to improve transportation efficiency by increasing payloads while safeguarding cargo and significantly reducing the environmental impact of transportation.

After receiving the safety approval certification from the CSC (Convention for Safe Containers) last year, Aeler obtained the authorisation to use its containers to ship cargo around the world. The recent official launch in Hamburg, therefore, comes at an opportune time to transform the sector. Aeler is currently delivering 50 containers to customers for exclusive pilots that have already started. Customers stem from the EU (Germany, the Netherlands, France, Spain), the UK and the US.

According to the company, orders are increasing by the week. “We have requests for over 1300 containers to meet, with demand for more growing every week,” said Naik Londono, Co-founder and CEO of Aeler.

Positive feedback from owners and terminal operators
During the launch event, industry players, including shipping lines, freight forwarders, logistics service providers, cargo, left positive impressions. “The logistics industry needs innovation, big time! The Aeler container is a bright example of a significant step forward,” said Procter and Gambler’s Sergio Barbarino, Founder of P&G’s Logistics R&D unit and Vice-Chair of Alice, the European Logistic Innovation Technology Platform.

HHLA’s Christian Greinert, Project Engineer Terminal Development, also complimented Aeler saying: “Containers come under a lot of pressure in their travels around the world. I was surprised to see how much more solid the Aeler container is. I wasn’t expecting that”.

The official launch of the AELER Unit One is scheduled for November 2021, and the delivery of the first 1000 units by the end of Q2 2022.
