Entrepreneurship is often described as a kind of economic decathlon. When it comes to start-up financing, this description is correct. The challenge is to attract investors, customers and support organisations at the same time.

Dear reader

Numarics offers a digital CFO solution that eliminates the need to use different software for accounting, invoicing, document management and liquidity planning. This week, the company closed a seed round of about CHF 10 million. One of the lead investors is UBS, which is planning a partnership with the start-up in order to expand its services for SMEs.

We reported on five further rounds of financing this week. It is worth noting that Swiss start-ups have been able to exploit other sources of money, including crowd investing, which has finally established itself in Switzerland. In our monthly round-up, we report on four companies – Selma Finance, KA-EX, Lend and Librio – that have been able to secure sums in the millions.

Another impressive list comprises the 10 sustainable start-ups that have received a loan guarantee from the Technology Fund: their products range from vehicles to children’s clothing to predictive maintenance solutions. And the Biopôle Startup Fund supports two life sciences start-ups – Sulfiscon and biped.

Investors and support organisations are no longer enough as a source of financing; start-ups also have to be able to attract customers – and they know this, of course. In its announcement on the opening of its first clinic in Ticino, Hair & Skin points out that the expansion path is demand-driven. In 2022, the company carried out 20,000 treatments and turnover was in the mid double-digit million range.

Konsento is also doing well with its platform for digital collaboration between board members, shareholders and notaries, with the number of customers doubling since the beginning of the year. Urbio focuses on the digitalisation of the energy sector, and its energy planning software is used by energy companies and engineering consultancies. The company has about 20 customers in Switzerland and the first commercial customers in Germany and Belgium have been added this year.

Don’t miss the Watt d’Or deadline on 16 July. Applications for the Swiss Technology Award 2023 are open, and you can still vote for your favourite start-up as part of the public voting for the Top 100 Swiss Startup Award

Finally, a note on our behalf: the Swiss Venture Capital Report half-year update will be published on our website next Thursday and can be downloaded from 9 am.

Have a good weekend.
