The Swiss-Russian Innovation Award - the Suvorov Prize - was granted for the 4th time in December. The winner is Winterthur Instruments.

The Swiss Russian Forum (SRF) has created the Suvorov-Prize as an award for outstanding innovative projects. Entrepreneurship plays a decisive role in the selection of the Prizewinners as the marketability of the innovation is viewed essential. The Suvorov-Prize is bestowed upon Swiss and/or Russian citizens whose projects have a cross-national or international impact as stipulated in the statutory aims of the SRF. The Suvorov-Prize provides the winners with USD 10’000.00 in cash and a one-year start-up coaching for the innovation project.

This year’s winner is Winterthur Instruments. Winterthur Instruments supplies measurement systems for noncontact and nondestructive testing of coatings. These systems can be used to control industrial processes as well as for quality testing and reference measurements. This helps customers to save production time and coating material as well as to implement 100% quality control on in- and out-bound goods.

The measurement systems determine thickness, thermal resistance and delamination of coatings, are easy to use and can be operated without calibration for relative measurements (e.g. to test thickness profiles). This is achieved using a patent pending measurement process based on a gentle warming of the coating with a light flash and observation of the resulting temperature response by high-speed infrared sensors.

The company was founded in 2011 as a spin-off from the School of Engineering of the ZHAW Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Winterthur to develop and market this technology.
