In a new report, the Progressive Policy Institute estimates that the European Union, plus Switzerland and Norway, has a surprising 1.64 million App Economy jobs. European companies and workers have been able to take advantage of the global App Economy boom in a very positive way.

The app economy shows how innovation can create jobs globally. The App Store was the rare case of an innovation with a clear starting point. Before Apple opened the App Store in July 2008,  there was no such thing as an App Economy job. No employer was posting want ads looking for iOS or Android developers; no one was talking about the shortage of mobile app coders. Since then the job growth is impressive. What’s more, the explosion of App Economy jobs came during the deepest recession in more than 75 years.

In total 1.6 million jobs were created in the EU countries plus Switzerland and Norway. In Switzerland there are 28’500 app economy jobs today. This result is gratifying, however regarding jobs per capita Switzerland shows only an average score. Nordic countries and The Netherlands perform clearly better
