Mobysa, a spin-off of EPFL, is crowdfunding a wireless version of its educational robot Thymio.

Thymio is an educational robot already used worldwide by private users and schools. Children can play with the colourful robot, programme it and learn from its numerous sensors. Now it is being developed as a wireless version, funded through a crowdfunding campaign on Indigogo.

Non-profit association Mobsya, a spin-off of EPFL, manages the production and distribution of the robot. The goal of the association is to promote education in technology through robotics. It coordinates learning projects around the fundamentals of technology, computing and programming with its partners.

The new wireless version will be compatible with the current version of Thymio. A visual programming language develops logical and inventive thinking and a textual programming language enables coding. Six pre-programmed behaviours allow even young children to play with the robot and numerous activities are available free on-line.

Thymio and Wireless Thymio can be programmed with Aseba, a set of tools designed to give the general public access to programming. It is an open-source software comprising VPL and Aseba Studio.

More than 5,700 Thymio II were sold between 2011 and 2014, with 79% selling in Switzerland, 14% in Europe, 4% in the US and the remaining 3% in the rest of the world.
