Company pushes boundaries of Internet Of Things (IoT) applications with the debut of the Portrait Play App at The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC.

This month, the Basel-based startup appamics entered the U.S. market. With the launch of the Portrait Play app at the Phillips Collection in Washington DC, the digital services company celebrated its first U.S. customer installation. Appamics created the unique IoT iPhone app Portrait Play for The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., in partnership with the Embassy of Switzerland and Basel Tourism, as part of the exhibition Gauguin to Picasso: Masterworks from Switzerland, The Staechlin and Im Obersteg Collection.

With the Portrait Play app exhibition visitors can magically transform their selfies into virtual masterpieces, based on the style of four world famous artists whose works are part of the show: Marc Chagall, Ferdinand Hodler, Alexej von Jawlensky and Edouard Manet. The selfie artworks can also be projected to a screen at the exhibition’s Swiss Lounge and they can be shared via social media using the hashtag #PhillipsGoesSwiss. App users learn about the four artists and obtain information about Switzerland and the arts hub Basel.

Since 2012 appamics has been developing innovative digital services to help European companies engage with consumers in a multi-screen environment. “We are thrilled to expand our footprint to the U.S. market and give American companies access to all the possibilities that the Internet of Things offers for location-based customer engagement,” said Oliver Schwendemann, Co-Founder and CEO, appamics LLC.

The playful and educational Portrait Play app was developed by using appamics’ IoT platform pharos. Using iBeacon technology that detects users in the vicinity, pharos supports a large range of IoT applications as well as targeted location-based marketing and customer experience activities.

“Appamics will continue to push the boundaries of innovating the way we consume and retain information about organizations and make each interaction more memorable and meaningful. Our IoT interaction platform pharos offers new possibilities to tailor and to gamify location-based marketing and engagement activities to specific customer segments, using iBeacon, geofencing and other technologies,” explained appamics Co-Founder and CEO Dr. Christoph Bratschi.

“For example, when using the Portrait Play app at The Phillips Collection, the movement of the museum visitor is monitored through iBeacon Bluetooth signals and as soon as the visitor approaches one of the four paintings, a notification is triggered that the transformed portrait is ready. All installations and calibrations were performed on-site to enable an optimal user experience. The mobile app uploads images to the pharos cloud backend system.  Via a WebSocket the portrait is displayed in real-time on a screen in the exhibition,” said Bratschi.

Visitors at the Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, can experience Portrait Play until January 10, 2016.
