GetYourGuide, Smixin, GENE PREDICTIS, PIQUR Therapeutics, Cytosurge and Swissto12 have been awarded with the CTI Start-up Label.

Good start-ups are usually called “promising”. But this expression seems to be too weak for the six start-ups that have been awarded with the CTI Start-up Label. All companies have achieved a lot in a short time. This is especially true for GetYourGuide, the worldwide market leader for online booking of tours and activities, but also for the five other start-ups.

GetYourGuide, Zürich
The numbers are impressive: 110 employees and 23’000 tours and activities which can be booked on GetYourGuide. The start-up which has launched its portal in 2009 is the worldwide market leader. GetYourGuide’s leading position is a result of a growth strategy fuelled by investments of leading venture capitalists allowing the start-up to grow organically and to acquire other young companies such as Berlin-based Gidsy and the peer-to-peer platform iGottaGuide from New York.

Smixin, Biel/Bienne
Smixin has developed a platform technology that enables optimal mixing of liquid concentrate, water and air. Compared to traditional handwashing Smixin reduces water consumption by a factor ten. The minimal water consumption of the Smixin technology is eco-friendly and enables new ways of providing hand hygiene. One application of the technology is a fully autonomous Mobile Hygiene Point equipped with a water tank that allows for approximately 200 washing cycles. In addition Smixin has developed a fixed system. A first product for professional kitchens based on this technology is already being sold by Bourgeat, an industrial partner of Smixin.

GENE PREDICTIS SA, Lausanne
Gene Predictis is a pioneer in genetic testing. The start-up now has developed two products which turn the concept of personalised medicine from a slogan to reality. We published a detailed portrait of the company recently.

PIQUR Therapeutics AG, Basel
PIQUR is a Swiss pharmaceutical company incorporated in August 2011 as a spin-off of the University of Basel focusing on the discovery and development of innovative anti-cancer drugs based on lipid kinase (PI3K) and mTOR inhibition. PIQUR’s pipeline originates from one of the most promising research areas in oncology. While mTOR is a clinically validated drug target, PI3K inhibition achieved proof of concept status in clinical phase III. We reported about the latest achievements of PIQUR last week.

Cytosurge AG, Zürich
Single cell analysis is considered to be the new frontier of many disciplines in modern biology research. Cytosurge’s FluidFM technology will revolutionize single cell experiments and is expected to play a crucial role in areas like proteomics, metabolomics, drug discovery, cell mechanics and stem cell research. FluidFM is a patented technology that combines a force controlled nano-manipulator (AFM technology) via a hollow cantilever with micro-fluidics. The cantilevers with a tiny opening at the tip can be used for various single cell manipulations: Injection, extraction, adhesion, pick & place and electrophysiology.

SWISSto12 SA, Lausanne
Terahertz (THz), the frequencies between electronics and optics, was until recently the last underemployed part of the electromagnetic spectrum. Harnessing THz-based technologies has the potential of globally impacting a vast number of industries, like both electronics in the 70’s and optics in the 80’s. SWISSto12 SA is the first company that provides efficient THz signal transmission components over the full THz frequency range. The innovative and patented technology can be implemented in a customizable way and appears to have a particularly promising future in medicinal and telecommunications technology.
