Startups among Switzerland’s flagbearers of the European Business Awards

Sophia Genetics, BioApply and senseFly are the national champions of Switzerland in the European Business Awards together with nine large companies. These will bear the flagship as the most innovative businesses in the country. Out of 33’000 submitted businesses, 636 National Champions from 34 countries were awarded.

European Business Awards (EBA) is Europe’s largest business competition to celebrate business excellence and best practice in the European business community. This year the EBA was carried out for the 10th time to celebrate the most innovative businesses from the participating European nations. The award plays a significant role in the development of a stronger and more successful business community in Europe. It enables companies of all sizes and industries to compare themselves to and learn from the very best in Europe.

A team of judges selected 636 National Champions out of 33’000 submitted businesses to represent 34 countries in the 2016/17 Awards. These were awarded in front of an audience comprising of business leaders, academics, entrepreneurs and political representatives from across 34 European countries.

In Switzerland three start-ups were nominated as the national Champions of the country, together with nine large companies including; Lindt and Sprüngli, DKSH Holding AG, Hapimag AG, Jucker Farm AG, Panalpina World Transport (Holding) Ltd, Remei AG, Planair, Ricola AG and Swarovski Crystal Online AG.

The four startups are:

Sophia Genetics – specialist in Data Driven Medicine. The company brings together expertise in genetics, bioinformatics, machine learning and genomic privacy for the purpose of generating accurate analysis of sequenced data. With over 170 hospitals using their Sophia “DDM”analytics platform, Sophia Genetics has created the World's Largest Clinical Genomics Community to facilitate better diagnosing thousands of patients suffering from congenital disorders and cancer. By so doing, patients receive the most accurate diagnosis of their disease so that they can receive the most effective treatments available.

BioApply – develops biodegradable and compostable packaging solutions for both retail businesses and organic waste management organisations. The company dedicates itsself to fight plastic pollution using sustainable biobased alternatives.

SenseFly –  Produces and develops aerial imaging drones for mapping and inspection of agricultural fields. This enables users to simultaneously assess the quality of their crops in order to yield healthier crops, reduce and increase production.
