Entwine’s eLearning video capture solution is a vital part of the solution to be integrated in over 350 lecture halls throughout the University of Manchester. Based in Zurich and San Francisco, the ETH spin-off Entwine provides products, services, and support for the open source media capture platform, Matterhorn.

The University of Manchester joins forces with Entwine, a leader in custom lecture capture solutions for higher education, to roll out the world’s largest implementation of integrated lecture capture based entirely on open source software solutions. Initially testing the solution with 125 classrooms, the University quickly realized the value and flexibility of the platform as well as the enriched learning experiences it was bringing to students.

‘Making as much of the University’s lecture content available online as possible is an important part of the University’s eLearning Strategic Plan and has a hugely positive effect on the student experience. Doing so will allow us to foster and develop blended and flexible learning environment.’ – Professor Richard J. Reece Associate Vice-President at the University of Manchester.

A survey of 588 students who benefited from the new technology showed that 91% believed they would achieve better examination results after having used the recorded lectures, 94% would like the service to be more widely available and 88% indicated that lecture capture availability increased their course module satisfaction.

The University of Manchester partnered with Entwine to design and implement the large-scale project based on Matterhorn, an open-source platform that supports the management and delivery of educational audio and video content at scale. ‘We evaluated and compared most existing lecture capture solutions on the market, our overwhelming conclusion was that Matterhorn provided both more flexibility–not locking us into a proprietary solution–and delivering a significantly higher return on investment in the short and long term.” – Stuart Phillipson, Project Leader and Media Technologies Coordinator at the University of Manchester.

Entwine is passionate about how technology can improve the way we teach and learn. ‘We are excited to be working with the University of Manchester on this, our international team has pioneered technology and media capture systems at leading, international universities, and Manchester is paving the way for best-practice solutions deployed at scale.” – Andy Wasklewicz, CEO Entwine
