REPIC supports Swiss institutions including start-ups that transfer knowledge and technology to disseminate renewable energy, energy and resource efficiency in developing and transition countries. Several start-ups have already benefitted from financial support, consulting and the REPIC network. Thanks to a new instrument the maximum grant has no been increased to CHF500k.

The REPIC Pilot instrument was introduced in 2004 and has since awarded more than 190 grants amounting to over CHF 20 million. The instrument is open to start-ups. Companies such as Koa or Candi Solar were among the recipients. Success stories of the Koa (company profile) and the Candi Solar (company profile) project can be found on the REPIC website.

The new, sixth phase of REPIC covers the period April 2022 - March 2024 and benefits from a 50% increase in funding (CHF 7.25 million for the period) to take into account the high demand and quality of the submitted projects. In parallel to the REPIC Pilot instrument (grant of maximum CHF150k and a maximum 50% of the total budget for pilot projects), phase 6 will see the introduction of the new REPIC Rollout instrument as of September 2022 (grant of maximum CHF500k and maximum 50% of the total budget for projects).

Application procedure and selection criteria

The application window for REPIC Rollout opened on September 15. There will be five cut-off dates per year. In the first phase the applicant proposes the project in the form of a project outline. On the basis of the outline document, the REPIC Steering Group takes a decision. In the second phase, a project proposal must be submitted to the REPIC platform. The REPIC Secretariat can be consulted before submitting the project outline to receive non-binding feedback.

Eligible are Swiss institutions that transfer knowledge and technology to developing and transition countries. The project must be in the field of renewable energies and/or energy efficiency and/or resource efficiency (waste, waste water and industrial processes).

  • Prerequisite for REPIC Pilot: The project must be in the pre-commercial phase (market-oriented pilot phase, concrete economic or technical proof of concept, no studies).
  • Prerequisite for REPIC Rollout: The project must be in an early commercial phase and has already successfully completed a prototype / pilot phase.

REPIC is a joint initiative of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN) and the Federal Office for Energy (SFOE). The mandate of the implementing agency for REPIC Phase 6 was awarded following a public tender to a consortium consisting of NET Nowak Energy & Technology SA and South Pole Carbon Asset Management SA.
