The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the world's largest and longest-running professionals-only game industry event. Two Swiss games will be in the spotlight at the conference which will be held next week in San Francisco.

The 2016 Game Developers Conference organizers have announced the eight winners of the Best in Play award program for exhibitors in the three-day GDC Play 2016 event, which allows emerging developers to show their games in a specially designed kiosk.

For the Best in Play award program, all GDC Play exhibitors were judged on their in-development or complete games by a panel of veteran GDC organizers. All Best in Play award winners will receive 2 All Access Passes to the 2017 Game Developers Conference.

Winners for Best in Play will also receive special designations for their kiosks at GDC 2016, where their games will be playable by all GDC attendees. All of these games will be available to play in the GDC Play onsite exhibit this year at GDC Play 2016.

Among the winner are two games from Switzerland:

Birdly by Somniacs

Birdly

Birdly tries to capture the mediated flying experience with several methods. Unlike a common flight simulator, users do not control a machine. Instead, they embody a bird. After conducting flights with thousands of participants all over the world in 2014 and 2015, SOMNIACS decided to take Birdly from its prototype level to a compact commercial product that is endurable, reliable and easy to maintain. For convenient transportation and installation Birdly Serial Edition integrates all technical components (simulation actuators and sensors, high performance rendering computer etc.) in one robust and well designed metal body.

Mr. Whale by Schlicht

Schlicht brings two players together in a cooperative game experience, in which they solve abstract and complex levels. With teamwork, timing and tactical placement both players bring color into the world of Schlicht.

The initial idea of Schlicht was formed at the Global Game Jam 2014. Since then it’s in part time production with the three core members and won multiple awards. In early 2016 the production team was scaled up. Schlicht is currently in the alpha state.

13 Swiss Games at GDC

This year Switzerland is represented by no less than 13 studios at the Game Developers Conference. The studios will present their newest works at Game Connection and GDC16. The selection highlights the quality and diversity of the current Swiss productions, with projects for mobile, tablet, pc and VR.

Two West-Switzerland studios - DNA and Apelab - are nominated for Development Awards at the Game Connection America, whereas Plug n’Play by Michael Frei and Mario von Rickenbach and Anshar Wars 2 by Ozwe Games are in competition for the International Mobile Game Awards. Switzerland will also compete at GDC Pitch, with CtrlMovie (presenting their interactive movie Late Shift) and Apelab (pitching their VR narrative Sequenced). Pro Helvetia has published a list with all 13 Swiss Games.
