Rejsekort & Rejseplan A/S, responsible for the operation of Rejsekort on behalf of the Public Transport Authorities in Denmark, has chosen Fairtiq as the preferred partner for developing an advanced mobile PAYG (Pay-as-you-go) national public transport ticketing solution for Denmark. The phased roll-out will commence in 2024.

Fairtiq outcompeted international contenders in a multi-stage procurement process after demonstrating the effectiveness of its market-proven and fully hardware-free Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution, known for its reliability and user-friendly interface. Fairtiq will now become the backbone of the Danish public transport ticketing system.

“We are delighted that the whole of Denmark will soon be able to use public transport with a swipe. This success shows that our technology developed in Switzerland is also in high demand internationally,” says FAIRTIQ founder and co-CEO Gian-Mattia Schucan, whose 130-strong team is constantly working on further innovations.

A significant milestone of this collaboration is the forthcoming introduction of a fully digital national solution enabling users to use buses, trains, metros and light rail throughout Denmark seamlessly. With more accessibility and convenience, the new solution is set to redefine the public transport experience. The smartphone-based solution will gradually replace the card-based Check-in/Check-out solution with currently almost 500.000 journeys per day. The phased roll-out will start in 2024. The deployment in Denmark will mark the fourth national implementation of the Check-In/Out system based on FAIRTIQ’s technology, joining the ranks of Switzerland, Austria, and Liechtenstein.

Founded in 2016 in Bern by Gian-Mattia Schucan, Fairtiq has established itself as a leading provider of check-in/check-out solutions used across the entire public transport system in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, as well as in parts of Germany, Austria and France. Before boarding a train, tram or bus, passengers check-in by swiping the app, providing them with a valid ticket for the entire public transport network in the corresponding region. Upon arrival at their destination, they swipe again to end the cost calculation. The app uses location services to register the route travelled and calculate the correct fare. Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) uses the technology operated by FAIRTIQ in its app, EasyRide, and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). Available on iPhone and Android,  Fairtiq has already recorded over 133 million journeys in total. More than 130 workers are involved in the operation and ongoing development of the product.

ISO 27001:2013 secured
After undergoing the certification process for one year, Fairtiq has obtained the ISO 27001:2013 certification, reaffirming its commitment to partners and customers to ensure data confidentiality, integrity and availability. “The ISO 27001 confirms that FAIRTIQ has a robust risk management system and is continuously working to optimise security processes,” says Manuel Jeckelmann, CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) and Head of Security at FAIRTIQ.
