Last week Snapchat is reported to have acquired the Swiss startup team from Strong.Codes. The startup develops tools that obscure software code which makes it harder for competitors to copy. Strong.Codes will develop a security tool to protect Snapchat from its rivals who are replicating its App features.

Early 2017 Laurent Balmelli, co-founder of Strong.Codes joined SnapChat. Four other employees from the startup later joined Balmelli “according to a person familiar with the move and information on their LinkedIn profile pages”, reports Bloomberg. The team will continue to work from its offices in Yverdon-les-Bains in Switzerland. Strong.Codes has since closed down.

Snapchat's greatest risk for its Snapchat social media app is Facebook’s Instagram and its mimicking of Snapchat features. The Strong.Codes’s team will bring an end to this. The team will develop critical security technologies to protect SnapChat and its communications. This will shield SnapChat from its rivals who are constantly replicating its features. In addition to their expert knowledge in the field of information security, the team provides know-how in the field of cryptography.

Snapchat continues to look for cryptographers in Switzerland and has been slowly increasing its European presence. It is one of the lead sponsors at Black Alps 17, a cybersecurity conference at Yverdon-les-Bains. In May the company hired Facebook’s Marianne Bullwinkel as country manager for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
