Incorporations of new companies reach all time high in 2020

The year 2020, marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, will go down in history as a record year in terms of the number of new companies incorporated. The Swiss Commercial Register recorded a total of 46,842 new company registrations, an increase of 5,3% compared to the previous record year of 2019.

The analysis of IFJ, the Institute for Young Enterprises shows a significantly lower number of companies were created in the first half of the year as a result of the imposed Corona measures. However, this decline was offset or more than offset in the following months, which were strong in terms of company incorporations. During the third quarter, 11,655 new companies were created, which corresponds to an increase of 15.5%. The last quarter of 2020 also recorded an increase of +13,0% with 13,208 companies.

 

Five sectors account for 50% of all incorporations

Around 50% of all incorporations take place in the craft trades (16.7%), consulting (10.2%), retail trade (8.6%), real estate (8.1%) and finance and insurance (6.8%) sectors. The least number of incorporations is in the activities of printing and publishing (0.3%), high-tech (0.6%), agriculture and forestry (1.1%) and education (1.8%).

Regarding the development of the sectors compared to the previous year, it can be seen that the areas of marketing and communication grew by +26.0%, hairdressing and cosmetics +21.0%, retail +18.6% and consulting +14.1%, the strongest in percentage terms. Decreases were recorded in Other services (travel agencies, freelance activities) -22.4%, Transport and logistics -4.9%, Printing and publishing with -2.5%, Finance and insurance -2.1% and Catering and accommodation -0.9%.

Incorporations 2011 - 2020$Since the slight decrease in 2015 and 2016, the Swiss Commercial Register has recorded a steady increase in new registrations. The year 2020 impresses with more new businesses than ever before. Thus, 2020 is proving to be the year with the highest number of company entries in the history of the Swiss Commercial Register (SOGC).
