The Swiss medtech sector performed strongly this week, including at the WA de Vigier Foundation’s award ceremony. But Switzerland must not rest on its laurels. New accelerator programmes, such as BaseLaunch, are called for.

Dear reader

The presentation of the traditional prize of the WA de Vigier Foundation took place yesterday in Solothurn. Four of the five winners come from the life sciences sector: their technologies detect life-threatening infectious diseases faster and more reliably, prevent scars after burns or skin injuries, make eye operations safer and improve the chances of a natural birth. The award ceremony thus became an impressive performance by Swiss medtech start-ups.

On Monday, federal councillor Johann Schneider-Ammann visited Basel-based AOT as part of the Biotech and Digitisation Day. The start-up has developed a robot that can cut bone with a laser. The councillor was thoroughly convinced of the innovation’s efficiency by working on a bovine bone with CARLO the robot.

Following the start-up visit, a panel discussion took place where it became clear that the Swiss life sciences scene is very well positioned at an international level. But it can not afford to sit back if it wants to keep this position. A measure to further strengthen Switzerland in the life sciences sector is the new accelerator BaseLaunch. We talk to managing director Alethia de Leon about the status of applications, new partners and the advantages of the accelerator.

Digitalisation is also on the agenda for the life sciences industry, and includes not only robots and tools for increasing efficiency, but also apps. This week, Bern-based eedoctors launched an app that allows doctor consultations via video chat, and health insurance company SWICA now offers people with sleep problems the online coaching programme from Mementor.

Should a start-up cause a sensation, it is dependent on investors. Interest in young companies is rising and thus with it the potential to find more business angels. A good way to attract the interest of private investors is transparent information. The investor report from Go Beyond, the third edition of which has just been published, shows how to do it. The report not only indicates how members of the Go Beyond network invest, but also provides clear data on the returns.

Applications are open for the Swiss Technology Award. The deadlines for the Swiss ICT Award, the innovation prize of the Central Switzerland Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Central Swiss new business prize expire shortly.

Finally, a reference to Swiss Medtech Day. Anyone who wants to see the performance of the Swiss medtech industry for themselves can do so on 13 June in Bern.

Have a good weekend.
